That distinction matters because a stained roof is not automatically a failing roof. Before assuming shingles need to be repaired or replaced, it helps to determine what is actually causing the change in appearance.
Why Roof Algae Can Become More Noticeable After Summer
Late summer can be a good time to notice changes in your roof because months of heat, humidity, rain, and shade can make existing growth easier to see.

If you’re viewing the roof from the ground, telling these conditions apart isn’t always easy. Avoid climbing onto the roof simply to get a better look, especially if the surface may be damp or covered in growth.
When Black Streaks May Be Hiding a Bigger Roofing Issue

- Missing shingles
- Heavy granule loss
- Cracked or deteriorated shingles
- Moss growing between shingle edges

These problems deserve to be evaluated separately from the staining. For example, an older roof may have algae growth while also experiencing normal shingle deterioration. Cleaning up its appearance would not address worn roofing materials underneath.
This is where knowing the age and repair history of your roof can be helpful. A relatively young roof with staining presents a different situation than an older roof already showing several signs of wear.
